The role, explained

Forward
deployed, — explained.

A Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSE) is a software engineer who works directly with customers to build and implement software solutions for their specific problems. This page explains what that means in practice, how it differs from hiring an agency, a freelancer or a consultant, and why it tends to be faster and safer for a project with a real problem behind it.

01 — Definition

a mix of three jobs

One engineer,
three hats.

Think of the role as a mix of three jobs. A normal developer does the first one. A forward deployed engineer is hired for all three at once.

  1. 01

    Software engineer

Writes code and builds systems. Clean, tested, maintainable software that your team can run after the engagement ends.

  2. 02

    Customer-facing engineer

Works closely with you. Sits in your meetings, learns your vocabulary, and owns the outcome rather than a ticket.

  3. 03

    Problem solver

Figures out how to adapt technology to real-world problems, including the messy, half-defined ones nobody has written a spec for.

02 — Benefits

why it works for your project

Six things you get
that a product team cannot give you.

Product teams optimise for thousands of users. Forward deployed engineering optimises for one customer with one problem, and that changes everything about how the work runs.

Faster to the real problem

01

No account manager, no hand-off, no telephone game. The engineer who hears the problem is the engineer who writes the code, so the first week produces working software rather than a proposal.

Built for your constraints

02

A product team builds for thousands of customers. A forward deployed engineer builds for yours: your data, your legacy systems, your security rules and your budget.

Deployed, not delivered

03

The work is not finished when a zip file arrives. It is finished when it runs in your environment, with monitoring, a rollback plan and your team trained to use it.

One accountable person

04

One engineer owns the outcome from the first call to the handover. When something breaks, there is a name, not a queue.

Knowledge stays with you

05

Working inside your repositories and your tools means the documentation, the admin and the habits stay with your team when the engagement ends.

Fewer surprises

06

Written scope, short feedback loops and either a fixed price or tracked hours. You always know what is being built, why, and what it costs.

04 — How it runs

the short version of an engagement

  1. Day 1

    Understand.

Sit with the people who own the problem. Learn what is slow, broken or blocked, and what has already been tried.

  2. Week 1

    Build.

Design the solution for the constraints you actually have, then write the code in whatever the environment calls for.

  3. Week 2–3

    Deploy.

Integrate with your APIs, databases and existing systems, then deploy into your environment with monitoring and a rollback plan.

  4. Ongoing

    Embed.

Improve based on feedback and work directly with your engineering and operations team until it sticks.

05 — Right for

when to hire a forward deployed engineer

A good fit when the problem
is specific.

The model shines when there is one clear problem and someone who can give feedback quickly. It is not a replacement for a product organisation.

  • You have a specific problem: documents, integrations, a slow legacy app, an AI feature.
  • You want it running in your own environment, not on someone else's platform.
  • You want one accountable person rather than a rotating team.
  • You want to start this week, at a known price.
  • You need a large product team for years. That is an in-house hire, and I will say so.

06 — Questions

about the role

What does "forward deployed" mean?

The term comes from engineers who are sent out to work directly with the customer rather than staying inside a product team. A Forward Deployed Software Engineer sits with your business, understands the actual problem, and builds and deploys the solution inside your environment.

How is that different from a consultant or an agency?

A consultant usually advises and hands over a document; an agency routes you through account managers and a changing team. A forward deployed engineer is one person who talks to you, writes the code, deploys it and stays accountable for it working.

Do forward deployed engineers have to be on site?

Not any more. I work remote only, embedded in your tools: your repositories, your chat, your meetings and your servers. The "deployment" is into your problem, not your office.

Which companies use this model?

Palantir made the title well known, and similar roles exist under names such as solutions engineer, implementation engineer or deployment strategist at many software companies.

How is forward deployed work priced?

Two ways: a fixed price for a defined outcome, such as the website-in-7-days package, or by the hour from $10 depending on the stack, with a written estimate first for everything else.

How do I start?

Send a short description of what is slow, broken or blocked. You get a reply within one working day with questions, then a scope or an estimate.

07 — Work with me

describe the problem, not the solution

Got a specific problem?

Tell me what is slow, broken or blocked. I reply within one working day, usually with questions rather than a quote, then a scope or an estimate.
