What pet owners look for on a vet clinic website
People visit a vet's website in one of two moods. Some are planning: a new puppy needs vaccines, the cat is due for a dental, or they have just moved to the area and need a clinic. Others are worried: the dog ate something from the bin, the rabbit hasn't touched its food since morning, or the cat keeps going back to the litter box. Both groups want the same thing quickly: are you open, do you see my kind of animal, and what do I do next?
Many vet websites hide those answers. The hours sit in the footer in small type, the services page is a list of medical words, and the phone number only appears on the contact page. An owner with a sick pet doesn't read; they scan for a time and a button. A clinic website should work like a calm front desk: it says what is happening right now, points to the right service for this pet, and makes calling or booking the obvious next step.
How the demo handles it
The demo is Saltbox Animal Hospital, a fictional small-animal clinic in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is playful and illustrated: a cream background, harbour navy and a warm orange, Baloo 2 headings and Mulish body text, and drawings of a dog, a cat and a lighthouse instead of stock photos of other people's pets.
The signature feature is a live status. The header pill, the card under the hero and the hours tables all read the current time in Halifax and say "Open now · until 8 p.m." or "Closed now · opens tomorrow 8 a.m.". Today's row in the hours table is highlighted, and the lighthouse in the hero dims its beam when the clinic is closed. Because the time comes from the clinic's time zone, the answer is right even when the owner is checking from another province.
Below the hero, a dog, cat and rabbit picker shows the services that matter for that animal: tick plans and spay surgery for dogs, quiet-room exams and senior bloodwork for cats, teeth and gut checks for rabbits. Each item has a sample "from" price, and the button opens the appointment form with the pet already chosen. A navy band lists same-day warning signs in plain words, with a call button beside it.
The pages
- Home: live status, pet picker, how a visit works, emergency signs, neighbourhoods served and clearly labelled sample reviews.
- Services: wellness and vaccines, dental care, surgery and urgent care, each with what is included, a sample price and a button that pre-fills the reason on the form.
- Our Team: veterinarians, technologists and the front desk, shown with initials and their own pets drawn beside them, plus a marked place for licence numbers.
- Emergencies & Hours: warning signs grouped for any pet, dogs, cats and rabbits; what to bring on the way; after-hours advice; and the hours table with today highlighted.
- Appointment: pet type tiles, reason, notes, preferred day and time, and owner details. The form checks every field, moves focus to the first problem and never sends anything in the demo.
Local SEO set-up for a vet clinic
Each page has its own title and description with the service and the city, one main heading and a canonical address. The structured data uses the VeterinaryCare type with opening hours, a city-level service area, phone and logo, plus Service and Offer entries for each service and breadcrumbs on inner pages. Owners search "vet near me" and "emergency vet" from their phones, so the pages are light: self-hosted fonts, drawn SVG images and no third-party scripts. To appear in the map results, I set up your Google Business Profile with the same name, hours and categories as the website, and a holiday-hours note keeps both in step.
Country notes
India
English with Indian spelling, and Hindi or a regional language where your clients prefer it. Prices in rupees, with UPI and card noted on the services page. WhatsApp is usually the main contact button, and the status can show separate clinic and emergency hours for practices that run late-evening OPD slots.
USA
US English and dollars. Accessibility to WCAG 2.2 AA matters for ADA complaints, so the form, colour contrast and keyboard use are built to that standard. Many clinics also list the 24-hour emergency hospital they refer to, which fits on the Emergencies & Hours page.
Canada
Canadian English, dollars with HST or GST noted, and the clinic's own time zone, such as Atlantic Time in Halifax. A clinic in Québec needs a French version first. Licence numbers from the provincial veterinary body sit in clearly marked places on the team page.
Australia
Australian English and dollars. Many owners have pet insurance, so the site can explain gap payments and claim forms. Seasonal warnings, such as paralysis ticks on the east coast or snake bites in summer, fit naturally on the emergencies page.
Finland
A Finnish version at /fi/ with English alongside, prices in euros in the Finnish format, and the business ID shown in a marked placeholder. EU accessibility rules make WCAG 2.2 AA the baseline, and the open-now status uses Finnish time and day names.
